5 Things You Can Do Right Now To Help Motivate Yourself

Motivation is one of those elusive concepts that is far to find for far to many people. This is especially true if you are depressed or down to begin with. So what can we do to help motivate ourselves? Here is a short list of things I do.

1. Get Up and Get Dressed

Even if you have no where to go, simply getting up and getting dressed in the morning helps we get energized and ready. I find I am far more likely to get stuff done and feel better about myself if I just do this simple thing right off the bat!

2. Set Up a Reward System

Sure, it is easy to say that we could just skip the work and give ourself the reward but that isn't the way our brain works. Truth is we all like to win!

3. Make a List

Can't get going because you feel overwhelmed? Make a list of what you need to do and prioritize. If you need help determining what you should and shouldn't put your energy into there is a great matrix (right) to help.

Also, don't be afraid to put some gimmies in there. Easy things to knock out help us feel like we are making progress which helps motivate us to do more!

4. Start Small

This goes along with the last part of number 3. Sometimes we just need a couple of quick wins. Actually this goes with number 1 as well... The point is that as we get stuff done we feel better and that should build on our motivation.

5. Stay Positive

There are all kinds of things here I could list but I'll just mention a few. One thing that might help is to figure some way to chart your progress. This visual progress will help you see you are making gains. Even when we have setbacks we can use this to go back and remind ourselves of what worked or what isn't working. I know this has worked great for me in regards to my budget and my chores.

Another thing (and this sounds cheesy but it works) is to leave yourself notes or find some positive quotes to pin up somewhere you can see every day.... This all sounds crazy and cheesy but it does help!

This is also a lot to be said for surrounding yourself with positive people. The point to this is that if you put yourself in a "can do" mind set you will be far more motivated!
